The Mom Behind the Blog

I'm Shayna, natural mama to two beautiful little boys, and wife to the best person in the world.  Together we live on a small ranch in coastal California. (That story is here.) Here, we make the most of every day by exploring every nook and cranny we come across, crafting our little hearts out, and working the land we're so blessed to live on by growing our own food, raising animals, and landscaping with native plants.  You know, old fashioned fun.

As a mother and woman, I have values and goals.  I want to live as close to the earth as possible, fine tune my intuition, and respect my instincts and those of my children.  I want to foster gratitude and love in my family, and I want to preserve the innocence and universal knowing that my children were born with.

We have a little bit of money that I want to make go a long, long, way.  Frugality, getting back to the basics, and weeding out those things that are distracting and unproductive will be key.

I am most passionate about birth and parenting.  I have given birth in the hospital and at home, and have opinions and beliefs about both.  I'm hoping to very soon dive even deeper into the world of birth as a doula.  My ultimate goal is to become a midwife.  Right now, however, I'm focusing on my own children and birth stories.

That is a journey though... I'm hoping that keeping this journal of our lives will help me work out the kinks in my parenting and day to day life that are keeping me from these goals.

I completely believe in the philosophy of learning by doing, having by making, and living with simplicity and love.  All three of those things require foregoing the myriad products designed for convenience (i.e. frozen dinners, processed food), products you don’t think you can make yourself (i.e. bird feeders, jewelry, cleaning solutions) and products that do more harm than good (i.e. TV, over the counter drugs, ). So that's what we'll be doing!  This is an experiment in homesteading, letting go of consumerism, exchanging convenience for experience and responsibility, and raising my children with creativity, work ethic and an appreciation for what really matters in life.

Throughout this blog I'll be exploring my passions for doing fun activities and crafts with my kids, yummy and nutritious recipes, gardening, and natural parenting.  Remember that little bit of money I told you about above?  I'll also be focusing on spending as little of that as possible.  So many people think that natural parenting, organic food and craft supplies require lots of money.  I aim to show you that that is not true, and have loads of fun in the process!
